Brian Yates
Alderman-at-Large, Ward 5
City of Newton, MA
Historic Preservation
- As a fourth generation resident of Newton
Upper Falls, I am keenly aware of the value of history in
the quality of our lives. I have co-sponsored efforts to
preserve and enhance the historic character of our City,
including the establishment of the Newton Upper Falls and
Chestnut Hill Historic Districts, the Demolition Delay
Ordinance, the Landmark Ordinance, and am happy to help
residents to use all the tools available to preserve
their neighborhood.
- I am a member of the National Trust for
Historic Preservation, Preservation Massachusetts, and
the Newton Historical Society. I am seeking City
acceptance of a state law that would provide tax relief
for historic renovations.
- I support the Community Preservation Act
as a means to provide funds for
acquisition and repair of historic sites, open space, and
development of affordable housing. For more information please visit the
Newton Community Preservation Website. I serve as a member of the
Aldermanic ad hoc Community Preservation Committee.
- During the last two years, I played an active role in the
successful establishment of the Newtonville Historic District and in the
more controversial but so far unsuccessful proposal to establish an
Auburndale Historic District.
