Brian Yates
Alderman-at-Large, Ward 5
City of Newton, MA
Historic Preservation
- As a fourth generation resident of Newton
Upper Falls, I am keenly aware of the value of history in
the quality of our lives. I have co-sponsored efforts to
preserve and enhance the historic character of our City,
including the establishment of the Newton Upper Falls and
Chestnut Hill Historic Districts, the Demolition Delay
Ordinance, the Landmark Ordinance, and am happy to help
residents to use all the tools available to preserve
their neighborhood.
- As
Chair of the Zoning and Planning Committee, I played an active role in the
establishment of the Newtonville and Auburndale Historic Districts.
- I helped to designate St. Bernard’s Church as a City
Landmark. I repeatedly informed the Archdiocese of Boston about the
historic district status of Mary Immaculate of Lourdes church to help
preserve it as the church that members of my family helped to build in 1910.
- As a member of the Comprehensive Plan Advisory Committee,
I helped to develop the “Planning for and with History” section of the
City’s Comprehensive Plan that included the “Charleston Principles of
Historic Preservation” that I had inserted in the previous Plan.
